Uncertainty Is Load-Bearing
In traditional software, uncertainty is a bug in the planning process. In AI development, uncertainty is a feature of the domain. A model’s behaviour in production will differ from its behaviour in evaluation. A prompt that works perfectly today will drift as the underlying model updates. User behaviour with AI features is genuinely harder to predict than behaviour with deterministic interfaces.
The leadership shift: your job is not to eliminate uncertainty but to help the team make good decisions under it.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Shorter commitment horizons. Six-week milestones instead of quarterly. Not because the team is less capable — because the cost of being wrong over a longer horizon is higher when the technology is moving fast.
Explicit assumption tracking. Every significant feature decision rests on assumptions about model capability, user behaviour, or business impact. Make those assumptions visible. When they prove wrong, update the plan without blame.
Celebrate learning, not just shipping. A team that discovers a capability assumption was wrong and pivots fast is performing well. A team that ships on time but discovers the feature doesn’t work in production is not. Calibrate your praise accordingly.
The Hard Conversation About Failure
AI features fail in ways traditional features don’t. The model says something wrong. The output is technically correct but tone-deaf. A new model version changes behaviour you depended on.
